Survey Predicts Wave of Enterprise Open Source Database Deployments

Enterprises Ready for Open Source Database Migration, Following Experience with Operating Systems and Middleware

ISELIN, N.J., June 1, 2006 — EnterpriseDB, the world’s leading enterprise-class, open source database company, announced today the results of the 2006 Open Source Impressions Survey, which solicited the opinions of more than 12,000 Java Developer’s Journal subscribers on topics related to open source software. More than half of all survey respondents indicated that their respective companies had either already deployed an open source database or were more likely to deploy an open source database than any other open source application, including CRM, desktop productivity, and ERP. The survey was sponsored and administered by EnterpriseDB.

“Open source databases are leading the third major wave of mission-critical enterprise open source deployments,” said Andy Astor, chief executive officer of EnterpriseDB. “Linux and its variants first demonstrated the tremendous advantages open source software brings to enterprise IT. Our partner, JBoss, and others next enjoyed widespread adoption of their open source middleware platforms. As the survey results demonstrate, database software will be next.”

The survey results are consistent with an analysis by Forrester Research, which recently published a report stating that open source databases will continue to put pressure on closed source RDBMSs as the features and functionality gap narrows between the two and adoption of open source databases continues to gain traction. In this same report, Forrester estimates the current open source database market to be $300 million and forecasts that it is likely to grow to $1 billion by 2008.

The 2006 Open Source Impressions Survey also revealed the three principal challenges to enterprise open source adoption to be lack of customer service and technical support, unfamiliarity with the open source landscape, including open source licensing and communities, and the cost and risk associated with migrating from proprietary software to open source software.

“EnterpriseDB’s charter is to deliver an enterprise-class open source database solution,” said Astor. “We add commercial-grade technical support, performance enhancements, and compatibility with Oracle to PostgreSQL, the world’s most advanced open source database. We’re focused on addressing the survey’s most commonly identified challenges to open source adoption.”
