Agri Stats Selects Enterprise Open Source Database for Reliability, Performance, Support

ISELIN, N.J. and FORT WAYNE, Ind., Sept. 27, 2006– EnterpriseDB, the world’s leading enterprise open source database company, and Agri Stats, the premier management reporting and benchmarking company for a wide range of agricultural industries, announced today that Agri Stats has selected EnterpriseDB Advanced Server to replace its Xbase and IBM DB2 databases. Agri Stats uses its database to aggregate and analyze operating data from companies in the industries it serves, including the broiler, egg, turkey and swine industries, and prepares reports for its clients containing aggregate industry data. More information and free downloads of EnterpriseDB Advanced Server are available at www.enterprisedb.com.

Agri Stats’ database of industry information, which contains nearly a terabyte of data, has been collected over the past two decades and is growing at nearly 50 gigabytes per month. Historically, the database was maintained using Xbase, a flat-file database, and IBM’s DB2/400. When the Xbase database’s large size made custom reporting using Xbase impractical, Agri Stats chose IBM’s DB2 Workgroup Edition relational database as an upgrade to both Xbase and DB2/400. However, DB2’s instability and frequent crashes in the test environment made it unsuitable for Agri Stats’ mission-critical production needs. The renowned stability and reliability of EnterpriseDB’s PostgreSQL foundation was a key factor in Agri Stats’ decision to replace DB2 with EnterpriseDB. Since the switch, Agri Stats has enjoyed trouble-free operation.

“Quite literally, our database is our business. All Agri-Stats’ mission-critical data storage, analysis, and reporting capabilities depend on it,” said John Dombrowski, vice president, administration and operations, Agri Stats. “That’s why we can’t tolerate database crashes, failures, or downtime. EnterpriseDB provides us with stability and performance that IBM’s DB2 simply did not. Now, we’re able to deliver to our clients the data and analysis critical to their businesses.”

“For our data-centric business, we require extremely responsive and capable technical support from our database vendor,” said Mike Moffitt, manager, infrastructure services, Agri Stats. “The EnterpriseDB technical support team has been truly outstanding.”

Agri Stats’ application also performed significantly better on EnterpriseDB Advanced Server than on DB2. Report rendering using Business Objects software and stored procedure execution have each been approximately twice as fast using EnterpriseDB as compared with DB2. EnterpriseDB announced a formalized technology partnership with Business Objects earlier this month, and the companies are working together to ensure optimum interoperability between EnterpriseDB Advanced Server and BusinessObjects XI Release 2.

“EnterpriseDB is best known for its ability to run applications written for Oracle, but its reliability, scalability, affordability, and world-class technical support make it a compelling choice for any enterprise with mission-critical database needs,” said Andy Astor, chief executive officer, EnterpriseDB. “Every enterprise using or considering Oracle, DB2, or any other proprietary database should consider the advantages of EnterpriseDB.”

“While the traditional focus on open source software has been around the cost advantages, Agri Stats’ selection of EnterpriseDB highlights an important fact: customers are increasingly selecting the software for the quality, not just the price,” said Stephen O’Grady, senior analyst, RedMonk. “The PostgreSQL foundation EnterpriseDB is built on, in particular, is well regarded.”
