EnterpriseDB Webinar Featuring Leading Research Firm and Sony Online Entertainment Demonstrates Enterprise Open Source Database Momentum
ISELIN, N.J., Nov. 14, 2006 – According to Forrester Research, open source databases can lower an enterprise's database total cost of ownership (TCO) by fifty percent. This finding and others were presented in an online seminar delivered on Oct. 12, 2006 entitled “ Realizing the Value of Open Source Databases: How Sony Online Entertainment Replaced Oracle with EnterpriseDB “. The online seminar featured Noel Yuhanna, senior analyst, Forrester Research, and David Manifold, director of database services, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). Yuhanna first shared market insights and best practices for evaluating, selecting and implementing enterprise open source database solutions. Next, Manifold discussed how SOE is migrating some of its key online gaming applications to EnterpriseDB, an enterprise-class open source database. During the seminar, Forrester's Yuhanna also reported that:
- 52% of enterprises are using and/or evaluating open source databases
- The increasing costs of closed source proprietary databases is a key driver of enterprise adoption of open source databases
- The feature gap between open source databases and their closed source counterparts is narrowing
- Mainstream industries are adopting open source databases, including education, telecommunications, government, retail, and manufacturing
- Open source databases are increasingly used for all enterprise needs, including transactional systems, reporting, data repositories, and data warehousing
- An increasing number of ISVs and VARs are using open source databases
- The adoption rate of open source databases is estimated to grow by 50% annually for next three years

During the Webinar, Manifold reported that SOE expects to realize an eighty percent TCO savings by using EnterpriseDB instead of Oracle. SOE is currently migrating its popular game, The Matrix Online, as well as its data-intensive user forums to EnterpriseDB. The company plans to continue migrating existing games and applications to EnterpriseDB, and all of its new massively multi-player online games will be deployed on EnterpriseDB.
