PGCon 2015 – Shared Memory, Parallelism and JSON at the Forefront

June 15, 2015

Industry conferences and events are a great opportunity for professionals, analysts, users and developers to network and engage, and PGCon is no exception. It gets under way this week with lectures, workshops and tutorials at the University of Ottawa June 16-20.

EnterpriseDB is deeply involved with and committed to the PostgreSQL community. Our goal is help foster the continued development and advancement of the software as well as promoting and facilitating the adoption of PostgreSQL worldwide. EDB has a deep bench of PostgreSQL experts and supports their participation in events worldwide. EDB is also a major sponsor of community events and has supported PG Con since 2008.

This year, a handful of our in-house Postgres experts and community contributors will be delivering presentations and a workshop. Look for the following sessions if you’re attending:

Inside PostgreSQL Shared Memory

Lecture – Thursday, June 18 at 11:00 a.m. ET
Bruce Momjian, Senior Database Architect at EDB and co-founder of the PostgreSQL Global Development Group.

This lecture is intended for audience members who would like to better understand how PostgreSQL shares information among different processes using shared memory. Bruce will provide an overview of the internal file store format, usage of shared buffers, locking methods, row value access and various other shared memory data structures.

Scalability and Performance Improvements in PostgreSQL

Lecture – Friday, June 19 at 11 a.m. ET
Amit Kapila, Database Architect at EDB

PostgreSQL 9.5 has a series of scalability and performance improvements in the works. This session will explore buffer management as well as the issues related to lock management that bog down performance. The talk will also explore improving performance by reducing writes on the backend.

Parallel Sequential Scan

Lecture – Friday, June 19 at 2 p.m. ET
Amit Kapila and Robert Haas, Chief Database Architect for the Database Server at EDB

PostgreSQL developers laid the groundwork for parallelism a year ago and now parallel query is nearing reality. Much of the low-level infrastructure like dynamic shared memory and background workers was in place but PostgreSQL needed user-visible facilities to make use of the infrastructures. This talk will get you up to date on the state of parallelism in PostgreSQL and explore the future for parallelism now that the basic infrastructure is in place.

NoSQL on ACID – Maximizing Results with JSONB and PostgreSQL

Workshop – Saturday, June 20th at 9:00 a.m. ET
Bruce Momjian and Vibhor Kumar, Principal System Architect at EDB

JSON has been ground breaking for PostgreSQL, no doubt about it. In this workshop, Bruce and Vibhor will incorporate instruction for several scenarios for working with JSON in PostgreSQL, and demonstrate performance metrics. They will also provide instruction on how to use different operations.

These talks represent a sliver of the contributions EDB experts make to the growing body of knowledge around PostgreSQL. To learn more about PGCon, please visit the conference website.
