Data Sheets: Postgres DBAs and Developers Classes and Postgres Plus Power Pack Classes

Postgres Database Administration Training Track

The Postgres Database Administration Training Track starts with the Introduction course designed for personnel responsible for the administrative role of tuning, planning, and optimizing the data layout for one or multiple servers. The Advanced course targets DBAs responsible for administering advanced solutions including replication, clustering, partitioning and security. Finally, the Performance and Scalability course addresses Postgres database internals, preparing DBAs to identify bottlenecks and implement highly scalable solutions.

  • Introduction to Postgres Administration

In this course you will learn the essential details of Postgres configuration, security, maintenance, monitoring, tuning, backups, recovery, and moving data. These classes convey the knowledge necessary for the student to perform their duties as a Postgres DBA, and are a foundation for the Advanced and Performance courses that follow in the DBA track. This course is designed for people with experience in database administration but who are new to the Postgres platform.

During the 4 days of instruction, participants will cover the following topics:

    Day 1

    • Introduction
    • PostgreSQL System Architecture
    • Installation
    • Configuration
    • Creating and Managing Databases
    Day 2
    • Introduction to PSQL
    • pgAdmin III
    • Security
    • SQL
    • Data Handling
    Day 3
    • Backup and Recovery
    • Routine Maintenance
    • Postgres Data Dictionary
    • Moving Data
    Day 4
    • Monitoring and Statistics
    • Performance Tuning
    • Procedural Languages

  • Advanced Postgres Administration

Beyond the regular maintenance and administration of your Postgres databases exist organizational needs for advanced solutions including replication to safe guard data, clustering for high availability, partitioning for performance and maintainability, and security for privacy and protection. This course covers these inter-related topics in detail.

Participants should be proficient in regular Postgres DBA functions. The Introduction to Postgres Administration course and its associated Certification exam provide an excellent foundation. The Advanced Postgres Administration course prepares DBA's to manage large, highly available databases and their related security requirements with confidence.

During the 3 days of instruction, participants will cover the following topics in depth:

    • Active Passive Clustering
    • Slony Replication
    • Table Partitioning
    • Advanced Management Techniques
    • Security

  • Postgres Performance and Scalability for Administrators

Often considered more of a 'black art' than a science, creating high performing highly scalable database architectures is actually the application of well known techniques based on computer science theory, combined with a deep understanding of Postgres database internals.

Upon course completion, participants will be armed with the knowledge to identify performance bottlenecks quickly, scale out databases across multiple nodes, handle thousands of user connections, and increase performance using distributed memory caching and associated techniques.

This course is a must-have for any enterprise data center that depends on high volumes of web transactions and usage. Participants should have completed the Introduction to Postgres Administration course.

During the 3 days of instruction, the following topics will be addressed:

    • Query Tuning Diagnosis
    • GridSQL®
    • Connection Pooling
    • Functional Indexes
    • Memcache

Validate and consolidate your training with Postgres Certification

Solidify your training and improve your professional credentials by getting certified after completing your Postgres training. Certification is a demonstrable sign of increased skills, improved knowledge, and a desire to reduce mistakes and provide higher service levels at your organization.
