A full-featured relational database, PostgreSQL (often called Postgres) has been under an open-source license since 1996. Highly extensible, it supports numerous procedural languages, so that developers can write procedures and functions in PL/pgSQL, PL/Tcl, PL/Perl and PL/Python, with many other language implementations also available, such as PL/PHP, PL/Ruby, and PL/Java. New programing languages, data types, and indexes can always be added to the ecosystem, allowing for rapid innovation. Examples include the JSONB document model and the PostGIS geographic information system.

EDB’s platform also includes a native implementation of SPL to support key capabilities of Oracle’s PL/SQL procedural language.
