Gartner Makes One Choice Easier in a Crowded Database Market
James Cash Penney, the founder of JCPenney, once said, “Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together.” The retail pioneer could be speaking of the forces underway in the database industry that have enabled EnterpriseDB to emerge as a formidable force in the market. The performance enhancements and new features from the Postgres Community as well as advancements EDB has added for EDB Postgres have come as the market has begun an overwhelming shift from expensive proprietary DBMSs to open source alternatives.
These forces have reshaped the marketplace – long dominated by just a few major brands and now crowded by new entrants with many offering point solutions to support new data types and models. In this dynamic new market, EDB growth has been driven by customers looking to transform their core DBMS, freeing budget to drive new applications such as mobile and customer engagement.The Gartner Magic Quadrant has documented the new database landscape and how that landscape has changed. Last year marked a sea change as the 2014 Magic Quadrant became the first year EDB, as an open source relational database management system, was named a Leader. This year, EDB was again named a Leader. In fact, EDB is the only relational database vendor in the Leaders Quadrant that delivers both an open source and an enterprise-enhanced, open source based database solution that can be deployed on-premises or in the cloud.
The key factors in EDB earning leadership status in the marketplace include:
- Continued enhancements to core Postgres technology in performance, scalability and security, enabling broader deployment of applications delivering business innovation.
- The EDB Postgres Management, Integration, and Migration Suites supporting replication, high availability, database monitoring and management, and data integration to meet the needs of mission critical enterprise applications.
- DBMS convergence to support traditional structured, semi-structured and unstructured data types to reduce the need to deploy costly, one-off NoSQL data silos.
- A rapidly expanding ecosystem of hardware, ISV and system integrator partners supporting EDB Postgres solutions.
- EDB’s complete suite of training, services and support, ensuring successful adoption of Postgres and migration of workloads from proprietary databases.
Gartner Magic Quadrant Leaders
The coveted Leaders Quadrant of the 2015 Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems, just released, is filled with multiple vendors that could make choosing an enterprise database difficult – except for the presence of EDB. EDB has been evaluated and recognized to be in the same class as Oracle, Microsoft, SAP and IBM.
So the discussion over whether an open source database solution can carry business-critical workloads is over. Our EDB Postgres Plus offerings already are at global brands like ABN AMRO, Ericsson, Lockheed Martin, MasterCard and Sony. Gartner recommends IT departments adopt an open source database solution as a standard for new uses and to replace commercial databases wherever possible. The recommendations, appearing in The State of Open-Source RDBMSs, 2015, were accompanied by a key impact statement: “Open-source relational DBMSs (RDBMSs) have matured and today can be considered by information leaders, DBAs and application development management as a standard infrastructure choice for a large majority of new enterprise applications.”
Forces Working Together
For nearly 12 years, EnterpriseDB (EDB) has been developing powerful software and a supportive ecosystem for Postgres, the world’s most advanced open source database. EDB has also developed subscription and other flexible pricing models that support business needs. Meanwhile, the PostgreSQL community has been developing new features for the database that emphasize enterprise capacity while extending the database to support new kinds of data and workloads.
At the other end of the spectrum, major traditional vendors reportedly atrophied in their interactions with customers, one getting significant media coverage for creatively raising revenue by tightening up on contractual observances and restricting entry level products to the point of forcing customers to spend vastly more money.
These forces working together have helped propel EDB forward in the market and solidify the position as a market Leader. The Gartner Magic Quadrant is growing more crowded with new vendors, but that’s not to suggest IT and database executives face a more confusing market.
