Free, Family-Friendly Online Video Game Prepares for Launch; Sign-ups for Open Beta at FreeRealms.com
METUCHEN, N.J., March 24, 2009 - EnterpriseDB, the leading enterprise open source database company, today announced that Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) is using EnterpriseDB's award-winning Postgres Plus Advanced Server database to power its new massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), Free Realms. The free online virtual world for all members of the family has entered closed beta and is currently accepting applications for beta testers at www.freerealms.com. Postgres Plus Advanced Server stores all data related to Free Realms' real-time operations, including characters' coordinates, weapons, pets, progression ability, user configurations, and levels. Free Realms is designed to handle millions of players, and the hundreds of gigabytes of data storage and millions of database transactions that would be associated with such a large player base.
A principal reason for SOE's original selection of Postgres Plus Advanced Server was the database's ability to run applications written for its existing third-party proprietary database solutions at a small fraction of the cost. With Free Realms, SOE is also extensively leveraging Postgres Plus Advanced Server's transaction processing and scaling strengths.
