Postgres Adoption Trends Mean New User Demands

April 16, 2014

Our record-shattering growth in 2013 has given us a host of new users, both organizations new to Postgres and experienced users expanding their deployments across their enterprise. This range of new users has different needs. Users new to Postgres need advice and guidance that mirror the steps they’re taking as they are getting up to speed. More experienced users expanding their deployments need help building up internal expertise as they bring in new teams or adding new hires. While every one of these users benefits from training and expert consulting, the question is how much and how intensive or sophisticated is the need.

In response, EDB has created a host of new services packages called Postgres Deployment Services. These services packages bundle targeted training with varied levels of consulting aimed at different points in the Postgres adoption path. The companies evaluating Postgres or preparing for their first deployment typically examine the same issues, largely related to installation and initial configurations. Organizations getting their deployments up and running often seek advice on security and access controls, while developers need guidance on query development as they begin building applications. When the database and applications at the ready, organizations often turn their attention to more sophisticated issues, like High Availability, backup, replication and performance tuning.

Services in the Spotlight

In the coming weeks, we will be featuring a series of blog posts that describe the challenges organizations face as they begin their adoption path. For each set of challenges, we’ve developed a services package with targeted training modules and varied levels of individual consulting to ensure Postgres users achieve success.

For more information on these new packages in the meantime, please visit our services page.

We also have a short, nifty video featuring yours truly explaining how we approach providing services.

The new Postgres Deployment Services packages we’ve created and the kinds of users best suited are as follows:

Postgres Evaluation Support Kit – Organizations new to Postgres are just beginning their deployments (pre-production) and get on-demand training and a number of hours of remote consulting that they can use for how-to questions, architecture advice and follow up to training topics.
Postgres Kick Start – End users who are in the process of developing and deploying their first Postgres database get expanded access to targeted on-demand training and more hours of remote consulting. Postgres Kick Start also has a Developer option with targeted training and flexible remote consulting.
Postgres Group Success – Organizations who are assembling an initial group of developers and database administrators get licenses for on-demand training access and remote consulting. This package is targeted towards smaller teams of two-four DBAs or developers.

Postgres Team Success – Organizations who are assembling a team of developers and database administrators to support Postgres in production get multiple licenses for on-demand training access and significantly more hours of remote consulting. This package also comes with an option to tap our RemoteDBA service, which provides a range of services from ongoing database monitoring and maintenance to upgrade management and strategic initiatives.

These packages provide organizations with a cost-effective path toward Postgres success. But they also create a systematic graduation of training and consulting for large enterprises that ultimately work with us through our long-standing consulting package, Postgres Enterprise Enablement. This services package provides access to on-demand training for entire IT departments as well as Developer Subscriptions and enough hours of remote consulting to address the gamut of strategic and technical considerations that emerge.

Look for our upcoming blog posts that will identify some of the challenges that can emerge at each step in the Postgres adoption path. When you recognize the ones you’re dealing with now, Contact Us so we can put your mind at ease and your project on the path to success.
