In addition to PostgreSQL and Oracle-compatibility, EDB Postgres Distributed 5 brings innovative new features and enhancements that meet the growing business need for operational resiliency, scalability and disaster recovery.

EDB Postgres Distributed 5:

  • Supports versions 12-15 of PostgreSQL, EDB Postgres Extended Server and EDB Postgres Advanced Server across on-premises and cloud deployments
  • Reduces the requirements complexity with more flexibility and Always On deployment architectures
  • Enhances the Command Line Interface (CLI) with configuration and architecture validation to increase ease of troubleshooting
  • Faster failure detection with next generation routing for improved disaster recovery
  • Improves usability through unified synchronous replication configuration
  • Streamlines the 60-day trial process so that more customers can explore the power of EDB Postgres Distributed, without requiring a purchase
  • And much more

EDB Postgres Distributed 5 highlights: Improved experience and reliability

Flexible deployment architectures

EDB Postgres Distributed 5 offers new flexible deployment architectures that empower customers with more choices to better suit their performance and availability requirements based on a few simple inputs. EDB Postgres Distributed’s Always On architecture is now composed of a set of basic building blocks and two basic starting points (one for single location deployments and one for multi-location deployments), rather than a standardized fixed set of deployments.

Postgres configuration and trusted Postgres architecture validation via Command Line Interface (CLI)

The EDB Postgres Distributed 5 CLI can be used to specify the durability, consistency and performance of a cluster, and will also have support for EDB Postgres Distributed configuration validation. This will check that a cluster is deployed in accordance with the supported Postgres configurations and architectures, ensuring that the cluster’s behavior will meet customer expectations. Customers utilizing the self-service trials can quickly check the cluster’s deployment for misconfiguration and ensure that best practices are followed.

Unified synchronous replication configuration

Unifying the configuration of synchronous replications makes it easier to choose, configure and combine different synchronous replication levels and provides better control over how they apply Eager Replication and Lag Control.

Integration with Open Telemetry

Customers can now troubleshoot multi-node actions more easily through EDB Postgres Distributed’s integration with Open Telemetry. Now,  they can collect both traces and metrics. Open Telemetry integrates with existing trace and metrics visualization tools, and is simpler to use in existing customer environments, making EDB Postgres Distributed user-friendly and easier to troubleshoot.

Postgres 15 compatibility

Customers can use new features and improvements that come with PostgreSQL 15, EDB Postgres Advanced Server 15 and EDB Postgres Extended Server 15. Customers can also leverage new Oracle compatibility features in EDB Postgres Advanced Server 15 and harness Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) to protect their data at rest with EDB Postgres Extended Server 15 and EDB Postgres Advanced Server 15. EDB Postgres Distributed 5 supports versions 12-15 of PostgreSQL, EDB Postgres Extended Server, and EDB Postgres Advanced Server.

Enable trial access

Beginning with EDB Postgres Distributed 5, prospects get 60 days of access to the EDB Postgres Distributed 5 software before requiring purchase. During this self-service trial period, users can explore what’s possible for their use cases and gain familiarity and confidence with the product.

Improved performance and scalability

Commit At Most Once (CAMO) performance optimization

CAMO is a powerful feature for maintaining data integrity for high value transactions. In this version of EDB Postgres Distributed, the internal implementation of CAMO has been revised to significantly improve performance so that it can be used for a wider range of use cases. Customers should have better performance (increased throughput and reduced latency) for CAMO transactions which should be more comparable to Postgres synchronous commit.

Support for new storage extensions

EDB customers now have the ability to use additional storage engines and leverage the extreme high availability benefits of EDB Postgres Distributed. This provides faster access to clustered data and increased scalability for normalized data models and foreign key lookups. EDB continues to optimize for new workloads.

High availability/Disaster recovery

Next generation connection routing

Routing client connections correctly and efficiently is part of the magic of EDB Postgres Distributed. With EDB Postgres Distributed 5, connection routing has been completely revamped, resulting in a significant simplification of the architecture and enhanced routing functionality. Clusters can be configured with "global" routing to support failover across locations. Global routing can be deployed simultaneously with "local", or single-location routing, to support complex consistency and availability models. Additional benefits include faster failure detection and connection failover, resulting in lower recovery time objective (RTO) on node failure and improved cluster availability overall.
