EnterpriseDB Introduces Postgres Plus Product Family

Lightning-Fast, Massively Scalable Databases Ideal for Web 2.0 and Other Advanced Applications

SAN FRANCISCO, OPEN SOURCE BUSINESS CONFERENCE, Mar. 25, 2008 - Today at the Open Source Business Conference, EnterpriseDB announced the introduction of Postgres Plus and Postgres Plus Advanced Server. Postgres Plus is an open source distribution of the PostgreSQL database and includes significant performance benefits and important ease-of-use capabilities for developers and DBAs. Bundled into a one-click, cross-platform installer, Postgres Plus is targeted at developers of next-generation applications and sets a new standard for commercial distributions of open source databases. Postgres Plus Advanced Server is a commercially licensed product that adds advanced capabilities to Postgres Plus, including robust Oracle compatibility, dynamic performance tuning, and sophisticated management and monitoring. The company also announced the availability of free tools, tutorials, and Web-based services for developers. More information and free downloads of Postgres Plus are available at https://www.enterprisedb.com.

Separately, the company announced that IBM has joined existing investors in a $10 million Series C venture capital round and that GridSQL, EnterpriseDB's business intelligence and data warehousing solution, is now available as open source software.

Postgres Plus

The open source, general availability release of Postgres Plus 8.3 may be downloaded immediately. The product is the successor to EnterpriseDB Postgres and is the fastest and most scalable PostgreSQL-based database ever created. It integrates PostgreSQL 8.3 with features that increase database response times, such as distributed memory caching, integrated connection pooling, and workload profiling. Advanced replication capabilities and a sophisticated parallel query engine add massive scalability to the database, allowing applications to handle nearly unlimited numbers of users and transactions as well as vast amounts of data.

Postgres Plus also features powerful ease-of-use capabilities that speed implementation time and ease production management burdens. The product's one-click installation simplifies enterprise deployment, eliminating the need to source multiple software components on the Web and manually assemble them. An email-based software update notification service is also included.

Postgres Plus also includes "Developer QuickStarts," which make it easy to adopt Ruby on Rails, JBoss SEAM, and REST architectures. These QuickStarts are also available for popular open source applications, including Drupal, MediaWiki, phpBB, and phpWiki. More QuickStarts will be added in the coming weeks.

"The products in the Postgres Plus family represent a quantum leap forward for next-generation Web applications requiring lightning-fast performance and massive scalability," said Bob Zurek, chief technology officer, EnterpriseDB. "We're combining the hottest new technologies from the PostgreSQL community with our own innovation to deliver database solutions that run from the desktop to the data center to the utility computing cloud."

"It has long been our opinion that one of the most important aspects of software adoption is the removal of barriers to entry for developers," said Stephen O'Grady, principal analyst, RedMonk. "With the introduction of features like Developer QuickStarts and the simple availability of the Postgres Plus product, EnterpriseDB may see the Postgres-based database adopted by entirely new audiences."

Postgres Plus Advanced Server

The general availability release of Postgres Plus Advanced Server 8.3 is also available now. The product, the successor to EnterpriseDB Advanced Server, adds advanced functionality to Postgres Plus, including the ability to run applications created for Oracle databases, dynamic performance tuning, and sophisticated management and monitoring. Postgres Plus Advanced Server is provided in certified binary format and is backed by industry-standard warranties and indemnification.

Several new features in Postgres Plus Advanced Server 8.3 enhance the product's Oracle compatibility, including bulk collect and bulk binding, explicit transaction control, definer/invoker rights, and multi-threaded Oracle replication.

Availability and Pricing

Postgres Plus and Postgres Plus Advanced Server are available immediately on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. Subscriptions for Postgres Plus and Postgres Plus Advanced Server begin at $995 per socket per year.
