EDB Ark: DBaaS for Hybrid Cloud Deployments

The accelerated pace of application development means most enterprises can no longer wait for traditional IT to lead those initiatives. Traditional IT practices that required provisioning hardware and software, configuring the network, and essentially recreating resources that developers need repeatedly for new projects cannot support DevOps models of application delivery.

Nor are those practices responsive enough to support the speed at which business initiatives now must proceed. Nor are they cost-effective.

Demand for ubiquitous resources at a low cost helped give rise to cloud computing. But IT requires still greater assistance in maintaining control and managing complexity as more resources become available. IT needs greater flexibility and control while automating infrastructure provisioning and de-provisioning as well as database installation and configuration.

That’s why EnterpriseDB® (EDB™) developed EDB Ark™.

EDB Ark is a Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) for hybrid cloud deployment of Postgres to private and public clouds such as Red Hat® OpenStack®, Amazon Web Services™ (AWS), and other deployment platforms. In addition, EDB Ark will integrate with one of the leading cloud-native PaaS platforms, Pivotal Cloud Foundry®. (Read the press release here.)

EDB Ark simplifies the process of provisioning Postgres deployments, enabling IT to take advantage of the benefits of cloud computing. When used with EDB Postgres Advanced Server, EDB Ark also provides database compatibility with Oracle®, offering dramatic cost savings and additional competitive advantages by enabling organizations to migrate workloads quickly, often with little or no refactoring, for new initiatives.

EDB Ark gives IT managers and database administrators the ideal combination of deployment flexibility with centralized control and monitoring. At the same time, it gives developers greater independence. Users can create databases using the graphical management console for self-service in minutes instead of waiting days or weeks, thereby supporting continuous delivery models that meet today’s accelerated strategic objectives. The EDB Ark console and APIs allow for quick and easy creation of Postgres clusters – each cluster is immediately set up with high availability, automatic backup and recovery, load balancing, and basic monitoring and management.

Enterprises using DBaaS with EDB Ark can realize greater developer productivity as well as lower costs through better resource utilization and flexible usage. To get started with EDB Ark, contact sales@enterprisedb.com.
