Extends Oracle Compatibility with Oracle Call Interface (OCI) Support; Automates Migration from MySQL, SQL Server, and Sybase

ISELIN, N.J., Jun. 19, 2007 – EnterpriseDB, maker of the world’s leading Oracle-compatible database, announced today the general availability of EnterpriseDB Advanced Server 8.2. EnterpriseDB Advanced Server is an award-winning, enterprise-class relational database management system (RDBMS) that runs many applications written for Oracle unchanged. The general availability of the 8.2 release is the culmination of extensive beta testing at customer sites around the world over the past two months. It includes extensive new features, such as enhanced Oracle compatibility and easy migration from Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and Sybase databases. In addition, EnterpriseDB Advanced Server 8.2 incorporates all of the many performance and feature upgrades of PostgreSQL 8.2.

EnterpriseDB Advanced Server 8.2 supports the Oracle Call Interface (OCI), a set of APIs used to interact with Oracle databases. This significantly broadens the range of Oracle applications that can run on EnterpriseDB with little or no modification. For example, EnterpriseDB’s support for OCI now enables many packaged applications from third-party vendors to be quickly and easily deployed on the EnterpriseDB platform.

“EnterpriseDB now gives ISVs with OCI-based applications the ability to offer their customers extremely affordable alternatives without costly migrations or rewrites,” said Derek Rodner, director, product strategy, EnterpriseDB. “Enterprises with custom-developed OCI-based applications can also realize significant cost savings.”

In response to customer demand, EnterpriseDB Advanced Server 8.2 also enables users to browse and easily migrate Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and Sybase data and schemas to EnterpriseDB.

EnterpriseDB Advanced Server 8.2 includes all of the many feature and performance enhancements in PostgreSQL 8.2, including:

  • 20% performance increase, meeting high-end OLTP requirements
  • Advanced support for warm standby databases, enabling high-availability and failover solutions
  • Online index builds, for no-downtime performance tuning
  • Enhanced ANSI SQL 2003 compliance, meeting enterprise standards requirements
  • Generalized inverted indexes, supporting semi-structured and full-text data
  • Support for state-of-the-art debugging tools, including DTrace

EnterpriseDB Advanced Server 8.2 is available as a free download at www.enterprisedb.com/downloads/postgres-postgresql-downloads. License and technical support subscriptions are priced as low as $1,500.00 per CPU per year.
