EnterpriseDB Announces Packaged Services for PostgreSQL and Postgres Plus

Most Popular Services Now Available in Packaged Offerings; Enables Organizations to Leverage PostgreSQL's Most Advanced Capabilities

EDISON, N.J., Sep. 23, 2008 - EnterpriseDB, the leading enterprise open source database company, announced today the availability of a new suite of packaged services, each implementing EnterpriseDB's proven best practices for deploying and maintaining PostgreSQL or Postgres Plus databases. The suite of services includes the Architectural Health Check, Remote DBA Service, High Availability Setup, Partitioning Setup, and Replication Setup. More information about EnterpriseDB's packaged services is available at www.enterprisedb.com.

"EnterpriseDB's packaged services help enterprises to realize the full potential of their PostgreSQL and Postgres Plus databases," said Ed Boyajian, chief executive officer, EnterpriseDB. "We've derived best practices from our work with many enterprise customers deploying PostgreSQL and Postgres Plus. Our high-impact packaged services embody those practices, enabling organizations to extend the capabilities of their in-house PostgreSQL experts to leverage the databases' most sophisticated and powerful capabilities."

EnterpriseDB's new suite of packaged services include the following:

  • Architectural Health Check (AHC) is EnterpriseDB's most popular service offering and consists of a three-day, detailed review of a Postgres Plus or PostgreSQL database environment. The AHC reviews database configuration parameters, hardware and operating system resources, and application type and data usage patterns. Following the review, recommendations on optimally configuring and tuning the database are provided.
  • The Remote DBA Service cost-effectively supplements an organization's in-house technical resources and provides daily DBA functions and support. The Remote DBA Service begins with an onsite visit in which EnterpriseDB's Remote DBA staff becomes familiar with the production database operating procedures and systems, develops working relationships with the in-house team, checks the backup and recovery systems, and performs an Architectural Health Check. Monthly and annual service plans are available.
  • High Availability Setup is a ten-day engagement during which a Linux-based active-passive cluster is configured. EnterpriseDB designs, configures, and implements the customer's PostgreSQL database for high availability and then trains the customer's DBAs in the maintenance of the highly available setup.
  • Partitioning Setup is a three-day to five-day service that configures PostgreSQL's robust partitioning capabilities to improve database manageability, performance, and availability. EnterpriseDB analyzes the customer's existing large databases to create and implement an effective data partitioning strategy. As the engagement progresses, EnterpriseDB educates the customer's DBAs and developers on the proper administration and maintenance of the partitioned database and the development of applications that use it.
  • The Replication Setup service configures PostgreSQL databases for near-real-time replication. Replication can offload processing load from a master database, move data from one database to another with minimal impact, and provide failover and standby capabilities. EnterpriseDB concludes this service by educating the customer's DBAs and developers on maintaining and developing applications for the replicated database environment.

"Open source database providers are maturing and, in the long term, will pose a greater challenge to Oracle, IBM, and Microsoft's domination of the database market based on improved functionality and enterprise-focused support and services offerings," said Matthew Aslett, enterprise software analyst, The 451 Group, a technology industry analyst company focused on the business of enterprise IT innovation. These comments appeared in an independent report, "Turning the tables: the impact of open source on the enterprise database market," published in March of this year (see Editor's Note below).
