In “What's Missing in Postgres?”, Bruce Momjian will break down exactly what those missing pieces are (spoiler: optimizer hints, sharding, TDE, global indexes, and multi-master replication), and explain the technical and community hurdles that have kept them on the wishlist.
Shifting from traditional infrastructure to Kubernetes can be daunting for any DBA. Drawing from his experience starting and maintaining CloudNativePG, Gabriele Bartolini provides a production-grade roadmap in “Migrating PostgreSQL to Kubernetes: A Practical Guide for DBAs”. Deep Dives & Database Internals
When a query planner suddenly switches from a great plan to a terrible one due to misleading statistics, performance plummets. Historically, Postgres has given users very few ways to override this. At “Summit”, Robert Haas will introduce his work on pg_plan_advice, a module that’ll ship with PostgreSQL 19, designed to enforce preferred plans, regenerate known good plans, and debug planner failures.
Ever wondered what your database traffic actually looks like on the network? Xavier Fischer will decode real-world message exchanges between applications and Postgres in “Deep Dive into the PostgreSQL Frontend/Backend Protocol”. Whether you are debugging a custom driver, doing production support without access to the codebase, or just love database internals, you’ll walk away knowing how to use Wireshark to capture and diagnose wire-level communication issues.
Cloud-Native & Ecosystem Innovations
Traditionally, adding or updating Postgres extensions in containers meant rebuilding, testing, and redeploying entire images. Not anymore. Gabriele Fedi will showcase how CloudNativePG bridges Kubernetes’ Image Volumes with Postgres 18's new extension_control_path feature (contributed by the CloudNativePG community). Learn how to load popular extensions like pgvector, PostGIS, and TimescaleDB on-demand, directly via your cluster manifest.
