Conference Preview: EDB at PGConf.Asia 2026

October 13, 2026

PGConf Asia 2026 is heading to Hong Kong from November 17–18! As a premier regional event for the PostgreSQL community, PGConf.Asia brings together developers, contributors, DBAs, and enterprise users from across the continent. Several EDB team members will be presenting sessions this year. Additionally, EDB's own Bruce Momjian is serving on the organizing committee and co-chairing the program committee. Here is a sneak peek at the EDB-led sessions at PGConf Asia:

Strategic insights

What's Missing in Postgres? - Bruce Momjian (Keynote)

While Postgres introduces roughly 200 features and improvements every year (well, maybe not this year), several major capabilities remain conspicuously absent. This keynote dives into features like optimizer hints, native sharding, Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), global indexes, and multi-master replication, explaining why they haven't been implemented yet and what it will take to get there.

Artificial Intelligence

Can AI Write SQL? - Bruce Momjian

AI tools continue to surprise us, but where are their real operational limits when it comes to database queries? Using the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and a sample database, Bruce explores how effectively current AI models can generate valid SELECT and DML statements from plain English instructions.

Building AI Search Pipelines with PostgreSQL: From Documents to Hybrid Search and RAG - Ajit Gadge

Effective AI search requires more than vector storage: it demands a complete retrieval pipeline. This session breaks down how to use PostgreSQL as the foundation for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). Learn how to ingest and chunk data, generate and store embeddings with pgvector, combine keyword and semantic search, and rerank results before passing context to an LLM. Includes a live demo.

Architecture & hacking

Scale out PostgreSQL solution — past and future - Koichi Suzuki

An overview of PostgreSQL scale-out architectures, analyzing past and present solutions like Greenplum, Postgres-XC/XL, Citus, YugabyteDB, and CockroachDB. Koichi explores common design patterns (sharding, table distribution, transaction management) and discusses the future of scale-out extensions, including FDW integration, distributed transaction hooks, and deadlock detection.

A Brief Explanation of the PostgreSQL Expression Node, and Other - Jian He

Targeted at database developers and core contributors, this session traces a PostgreSQL expression Node through parse analysis to reveal how its attributes are established. Jian will also share practical developer tips to make hacking on PostgreSQL core code easier.

Performance tuning & infrastructure optimization

Reducing Costs and Improving Performance With Data Modeling in Postgres - Charly Batista

Discover how internal data layout impacts both hardware efficiency and cloud spending. Charly unpacks PostgreSQL's Free Space Map (FSM) and internal data organization, offering actionable strategies to align data within storage blocks. Learn how small data modeling shifts can shrink disk/memory footprints and drive down infrastructure costs.

A Benchmarking Case Study of PostgreSQL Locks, Partitions, and Peak Load: Finding (and Fixing) a Silent Throughput Ceiling - Vishal Sawale

Under heavy write concurrency, Relation-Extension Lock Contention can quietly cap performance right when peak traffic hits. Through a real-world TPC-C benchmarking case study on vanilla PostgreSQL, Vishal walks through how to diagnose hidden lock contention, use table partitioning at the storage layer to unblock parallel execution, and establish clear partitioning guidelines for production workloads.

Cloud, Kubernetes & fleet management

PostgreSQL on Kubernetes: CloudNativePG 101 - Gabriele Quaresima, Tao LI

An introductory deep dive into CloudNativePG, the CNCF sandbox operator designed to manage high-availability PostgreSQL clusters on Kubernetes. Topics include Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs), operand images, Prometheus monitoring, declarative database management, and major version upgrades, followed by a live demo.

Standardizing the Chaos: Fleet Management and Automated Deployments with Trusted Postgres Architect (TPA) - Nawaz Ahmed

Managing dozens of database clusters across environments often leads to configuration drift and operational overhead. Nawaz demonstrates how Trusted Postgres Architect, an open-source Ansible-based orchestration tool, implements "architecture-as-code." Learn how to provision production-ready architectures featuring Patroni (High Availability), PgBouncer (connection pooling), and Barman (disaster recovery) via declarative configuration files, live demo included.
