The three-year return on investment of the EDB Postgres™ Platform is 168%, according to a new white paper on the comprehensive business impact of EDB Postgres based on interviews with EDB customers. The white paper titled The Economic and Business Advantages of EDB Postgres Database Solutions*, developed by International Data Corp (IDC), a leading IT market research and advisory firm. The white paper describes how EDB Postgres Platform customers are well positioned for meeting expanding business demands, while reducing costs across the board compared to previous or other database management systems (DBMS).

To prepare the white paper, IDC interviewed EnterpriseDB® (EDB™) customers. The customers had an average of 18,400 employees, were located in the United States and Europe, and represented a cross-section of industries, including communications; financial and professional services; and transportation.

These customers reported that EDB provides a cost-effective, scalable, and flexible database platform that meets their evolving business demands for database resources. IDC calculates that these organizations will:

  • Achieve a three-year return on investment (ROI) of 168%
  • Spend an average of 42% less on operations over three years using EDB Postgres than alternative commercial and open source database solutions; and
  • Avoid vendor lock-in, a concern commonly expressed by the companies interviewed.

Each of the factors above has a significant effect on an organization’s ROI when implementing an EDB Postgres solution. Additional findings include:

  • The interval for payback on investment in EDB Postgres was an average of about four months for the organizations in the study.
  • EDB’s all-inclusive subscriptions, which frequently replace traditional up-front license fees and additional maintenance fees, resulted in the interviewed organizations spending 65% less on database-related costs and lowering ongoing maintenance costs by 32%.
  • Greater database reliability contributed to a 16% reduction in staff time for administration and support and 24% fewer unplanned database-related outages, while repairing them if they did occur took 50% less time than previous or alternative solutions. The impact on operations of unplanned outages was reduced by 62%.
  • These findings were with customers deploying EDB Postgres vs. leading, traditional DBMS systems as well as open source alternatives that were self- or consultancy-supported.

The white paper stated: “When most people consider migrating to an open source RDBMS, it is purely a matter of cost for them, and they are prepared to accept awkward administration and poor performance as the trade-off. IDC found that for the customers in this study, there were no trade-offs with EDB Postgres. The study found that EDB customers’ EDB Postgres systems run faster, are easier to administer, and provide more flexibility than the systems they had used previously. EDB Postgres is a target for new application development as well as a migration target not only for someone looking for the “typical” benefits of open source but also for anyone looking for a simpler-to-manage, high-performance, and lower-cost RDBMS that demands no compromise.”

About IDC’s Methodology

IDC used a tested methodology to conduct its ROI analysis. According to the IDC white paper, its three-step process was as follows:

“First, it gathered quantitative benefit information during the interviews using a before-and-after assessment. In this study, the benefits included database-related cost reductions, staff time savings and productivity gains, as well as increased revenue.

Second, it created a complete investment (three-year total cost analysis) profile based on the customer interviews. Investments go beyond the annual costs of using EDB Postgres and can include additional costs related to the database platform, including migrations, planning, consulting, configuration or maintenance, and staff or user training.

Finally, the analyst firm calculated the ROI and payback period. IDC conducted a depreciated cash flow analysis of the benefits and investments for the organizations’ use of EDB Postgres over a three-year period. ROI is the ratio of the net present value (NPV) to discounted investment. The payback period is the point at which cumulative benefits equal the initial investment.”
