EnterpriseDB Announces Top Software Quality

Industry-Leading Tool Used to Identify Defects;
All Fixes Donated to PostgreSQL Community

EDISON, N.J., July 12, 2005 – EnterpriseDB Corporation, an enterprise-class database company, announced today that its PostgreSQL-based RDBMS was analyzed by Coverity Prevent, the world’s most advanced static software analysis tool, and found to contain only 20 defects in more than 775,000 lines of code. This is the lowest defect density (one defect per nearly 39,000 lines of code) reported by Coverity for an open source relational database. Each of the 20 defects has been remedied, rendering the product "Coverity Inspected" by the terms of Coverity’s rigorous certification program. The fixes will be reflected in the next releases of PostgreSQL and EnterpriseDB 2005, expected later this summer. More information and free beta downloads of EnterpriseDB 2005 are available at the company’s website at www.enterprisedb.com.

In February of this year, Coverity analyzed the competing MySQL open source database and found an average of one defect in every 4,000 lines of code. At the time, this was considered a significant improvement over commercial code’s average of one defect per 250 lines of code.

"Respected software analysis tools like Coverity Prevent are a common measure of software quality. Our results were better than MySQL’s by an order of magnitude and better than average commercial code by two orders of magnitude," said EnterpriseDB CEO Andy Astor. "EnterpriseDB’s enterprise-class RDBMS is based on the PostgreSQL database, and its superb quality is a tribute to both the work of the PostgreSQL community and the intense efforts of our own software engineers."

EnterpriseDB contributed the Coverity results to the PostgreSQL community and worked closely with the community to repair the reported defects. The fixes will be reflected in the next release of both PostgreSQL and EnterpriseDB 2005, EnterpriseDB’s RDBMS. The second Beta release of EnterpriseDB 2005 is now available, and the General Availability release is expected later this summer. Until then, the product and full commercial-grade technical support are available from the company free of charge.
