EnterpriseDB Names Larry Alston Vice President, Marketing and Product Management

IONA Open Source Executive to Lead Marketing and Product Management Efforts at Leading Enterprise Open Source Database Company

WESTFORD, Mass., May 21, 2009 - EnterpriseDB®, the leading enterprise open source database company, today announced that Larry Alston has joined the company as the vice president of marketing and product management. Biographies of the company's entire leadership team are available at http://www.enterprisedb.com/about/executive-team.

Alston brings more than 25 years of product management, marketing, and engineering experience to EnterpriseDB. Previously, Alston was the vice president and general manager, open source, at IONA, where he was responsible for leading the strategic direction and operations of IONA's open source business. In that role, he led the integration of LogicBlaze, a leading provider of open source solutions for service-oriented architecture (SOA) that was acquired by IONA in April 2007. Under Alston's leadership, IONA successfully extended the FUSE family of open source products and established the company's disruptive and innovative "open core" business model. Prior to that, Alston held other senior-level positions at IONA, including vice president of corporate strategy, product management, and worldwide marketing.

"I'm delighted to welcome Larry to the EnterpriseDB team," said Ed Boyajian, chief executive officer, EnterpriseDB. "Larry is a veteran executive whose unique experience selling open source infrastructure software to large enterprises on a low-touch, subscription-based model will be invaluable as we take EnterpriseDB and the Postgres Plus family of products to the next level."

"This is a critical time in the evolution of the enterprise software marketplace. Enterprise acceptance of open source solutions is now well-established, and organizations are less willing than ever to accept the high prices of proprietary alternatives," said Alston. "I'm excited to join the effort to drive the success of EnterpriseDB and Postgres Plus."

Earlier in his career, Alston was the vice president of products at Pantero, where he was responsible for defining the company's product and marketing strategy. Prior to that, in his role as a corporate officer and executive vice president of product management and marketing at eXcelon, Alston helped take the company public and was instrumental in developing the strategy and vision to bring the technology to new markets. His strategy and execution was directly responsible for growing the company's XML product division from $2 million to $20 million in just 18 months.

Alston holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Massachusetts and an MBA from Northeastern University.
